The Transforming Work of the Prophetic Voice

2 Minute Read

I am still reflecting on the powerful teachings and worship moments from our THRIVE conference this past October with Dr. Tennant. There was such a sweet presence and sensitivity to what the Spirit was doing that is hard to put into words…you just had to be there! I was especially encouraged by her session on the prophetic and the great need for this underused stream of the five-fold ministry in our churches.

In 1 Samuel 10:5-7, Samuel says to Saul, who he’s just anointed as King, “…As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place with lyres, timbrels, pipes and harps being played before them, and they will be prophesying. The Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person. Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you”. The prophetic voice and music have such a strong correlation throughout scripture. At THRIVE, Dr. Tennant mentioned that the prophetic is one of the most underused giftings in the church today. There are a number of reasons for this…counterfeits, lack of teaching, fear of the unknown, etc. She says in her book, Keys to the Apostolic and Prophetic, “It takes faith to allow God’s songs to become our songs. Worship leaders must be willing to step out and release new songs, forgetting their pride and the uncertainty of where the unknown song will go. As they forge ahead with fresh words and melody from the Lord, God will work powerfully and touch lives.” There is a deeper level of intimacy that can be had in the prophetic (worship) that brings about powerful change for specific, divine moments. This is what we see evidenced in the life of Saul in 1 Samuel 10. The prophetic words spoken over Saul literally transformed him into a “different person.” The prophetic changes, convicts, heals, delivers, transforms, etc.! How we need this in our churches today!

So how can we begin to incorporate prophetic worship into our churches and see the powerful transformation it brings? Begin to practice the prophetic in your personal worship times. Ask the Lord to open your eyes, ears and heart to understand what the Lord is speaking for specific moments. This will develop a sensitivity and confidence to step out in faith and obedience when the Lord begins to move and speak in these ways.

Let’s begin to reclaim and unleash the authentic, prophetic voice across our fellowship!
